The Ring You Will Wear Every Day for Life
Your wedding band is the most-worn piece of jewelry you will ever own. Unlike engagement rings or special-occasion pieces, your wedding band stays on your finger through every moment of daily life — work, sleep, cooking, traveling. Choosing the right one is about durability, comfort, and personal style in equal measure.
Band Styles
- Plain metal band: Classic, timeless, and nearly indestructible. A smooth gold or platinum band that lets the engagement ring be the star. The most traditional choice
- Diamond band: Small diamonds set into the band add sparkle without the height of an engagement ring setting. Can be channel-set, pave-set, or prong-set
- Eternity band: Diamonds all the way around (or halfway around). More sparkle than a standard diamond band. A statement wedding band
- Contoured band: A band with a curve or notch designed to sit flush against a specific engagement ring shape. Essential for engagement rings with distinctive profiles
- Stackable band: A thin band designed to be stacked with multiple rings. Some couples add a new stackable band for each anniversary
Width
- Women's bands: Typically 1.5-4mm. 2mm is delicate and minimal. 3-4mm provides more presence. Choose proportional to your engagement ring and finger size
- Men's bands: Typically 4-8mm. 5-6mm is the most popular. Wider bands feel more substantial and masculine. Narrower bands feel lighter and more modern
Comfort Fit vs Standard Fit
- Comfort fit: The interior of the band is slightly domed/rounded. Slides on easily, sits comfortably, and reduces the "squeezing" sensation. Recommended for bands wider than 4mm. Slightly more expensive
- Standard fit: Flat interior. Traditional construction. Works well for narrower bands. Less expensive
Matching Your Engagement Ring
- Metal: Match the metal of your engagement ring for the most cohesive look. Mixing metals is acceptable but should be intentional
- Profile: The band should sit flush against the engagement ring without gaps. If your engagement ring has a unique shape (halo, cathedral), try bands specifically designed to nest against it
- Style: The band should complement, not compete with, the engagement ring. If the engagement ring is a statement, the band can be simple. If the engagement ring is a solitaire, a diamond band adds sparkle
Practical Considerations
- Resizing: Plain bands and half-eternity bands can be resized. Full eternity bands cannot. Your fingers may change size over decades
- Daily wear: Choose something comfortable for all-day, every-day wear. Try on bands and wear them for a few minutes before deciding
- Lifestyle: Active lifestyles benefit from smooth, low-profile bands. Office lifestyles can accommodate higher-profile diamond bands
