Clarity Matters Less Than You Think
Diamond clarity measures the absence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface characteristics (blemishes). While clarity is one of the 4Cs, it is arguably the one where you can be most flexible without any visible impact on the diamond's beauty. Understanding clarity grades helps you make smart purchasing decisions and allocate your budget where it matters most.
The Clarity Scale (GIA/IGI)
- FL (Flawless): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and expensive. Unnecessary for beauty
- IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions, only minor surface blemishes under 10x. Also extremely rare
- VVS1-VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Inclusions so tiny they are difficult to see even under 10x magnification. Premium grade with zero visual impact
- VS1-VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions visible under 10x but not to the naked eye. The sweet spot for quality-conscious buyers
- SI1-SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions visible under 10x and may be visible to the naked eye in SI2. The value sweet spot — many SI1 diamonds are eye-clean
- I1-I3 (Included): Inclusions visible to the naked eye. Can affect brilliance and durability at I2-I3. Generally avoid for engagement rings
The Eye-Clean Standard
The most practical standard for clarity is whether the diamond is eye-clean — meaning no inclusions are visible to the naked eye when viewed face-up at a normal viewing distance (about 12 inches). Most VS2 and many SI1 diamonds meet this standard. You are paying for invisible differences above VS2.
Clarity Recommendations by Shape
- Round brilliant: VS2-SI1. The brilliant facet pattern hides inclusions effectively
- Oval, cushion, pear: VS2-SI1. Similar hiding ability to round
- Emerald, Asscher: VS2 or better. The step-cut facets create a hall-of-mirrors effect that makes inclusions more visible
- Marquise, heart: VS2-SI1. Brilliant cut hides inclusions well
Where to Spend Instead
If you save on clarity by choosing VS2 or SI1 instead of VVS, put that budget toward a better cut grade (which directly affects sparkle) or a larger carat weight (which is immediately visible). A 1.50 carat SI1 with excellent cut will look dramatically better than a 1.00 carat VVS1 with the same budget.
