Brilliant Sparkle in a Rectangular Package
The radiant cut combines the elegant rectangular outline of the emerald cut with the brilliant sparkle of the round. Created in 1977 by Henry Grossbard, it was the first rectangular diamond shape to feature a full brilliant-cut facet pattern. If you love the shape of an emerald cut but want more sparkle, the radiant cut is your answer.
What Makes Radiant Cut Special
- Brilliant sparkle: Unlike the step-cut emerald, the radiant uses 70 facets in a brilliant pattern that produces intense sparkle, fire, and scintillation. It is the sparkliest rectangular shape
- Cropped corners: Like the emerald cut, the radiant has beveled corners that give it a distinctive octagonal outline. These corners reduce chipping risk and add character
- Versatile proportions: Available in square (1.00 ratio) to rectangular (1.30+ ratio). Both silhouettes are popular and beautiful
- Forgiving of inclusions: The brilliant facet pattern hides inclusions effectively, similar to round and oval cuts. You can go lower on clarity without visible impact
Choosing a Radiant Cut
- Length-to-width ratio: 1.00-1.10 for square radiants. 1.15-1.35 for rectangular radiants. Both are valid — choose based on which silhouette appeals to you
- Color: G-I works well. The brilliant facets scatter light effectively, masking slight color
- Clarity: VS2-SI1 is the value sweet spot. The crushed-ice sparkle pattern makes inclusions very difficult to see
- Crushed ice vs chunky: Radiant cuts vary in their sparkle pattern. Some show broad flashes (chunky) while others show a fine, scattered sparkle pattern (crushed ice). Both are beautiful — personal preference decides
Radiant vs Emerald
- Sparkle: Radiant wins decisively. Brilliant facets produce significantly more sparkle than emerald's step facets
- Aesthetic: Emerald is subtle, architectural, and sophisticated. Radiant is lively, bright, and eye-catching
- Clarity: Radiant hides inclusions better. You can go lower on clarity grade and save money
- Color: Radiant masks color better. The brilliant facets scatter color perception
Radiant vs Cushion
- Both are rectangular/square with brilliant faceting and excellent sparkle
- Radiant has cropped (straight) corners. Cushion has rounded corners
- Radiant has a crisper, more geometric outline. Cushion is softer and more romantic
- Both are excellent choices — the decision comes down to whether you prefer sharp or rounded corners
