Two Ways to Cover a Ring in Diamonds
Pave and micropave settings both create a diamond-encrusted surface, but they differ in diamond size, density, and visual effect. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right level of sparkle detail for your engagement ring, wedding band, or fashion ring.
Pave Setting
- Diamond size: Small diamonds, typically 1.0-2.0mm in diameter (approximately 0.005-0.03 carats each)
- How they are set: Each diamond is held by tiny prongs (usually two shared prongs between adjacent diamonds) or bead-set into the metal surface
- Appearance: A surface covered in diamonds with minimal visible metal between stones. The name comes from the French word 'pave' meaning 'paved' — as in paved with diamonds
- Sparkle effect: Individual diamonds are small enough that they read as a continuous sparkle surface rather than distinct individual stones
Micropave Setting
- Diamond size: Very small diamonds, typically 0.5-1.0mm in diameter (approximately 0.001-0.005 carats each). Smaller than standard pave
- How they are set: Set under magnification with extremely tiny prongs. Requires specialized skill and equipment
- Appearance: An even more seamless, continuous diamond surface. Less visible metal between diamonds than standard pave. The diamonds are so small they create an almost liquid-sparkle effect
- Sparkle effect: Fine, scattered, continuous shimmer. Like a dusting of diamond light rather than individual points of sparkle
Key Differences
- Diamond count: Micropave uses more diamonds per area (smaller stones packed tighter). A micropave band may contain 50-100+ tiny diamonds where a pave band would use 20-40 larger ones
- Visual effect: Pave has slightly more defined individual sparkle. Micropave has a finer, more continuous shimmer
- Durability: Pave diamonds are slightly easier to replace if lost (larger, more accessible). Micropave repair is more complex and specialized
- Cost: Micropave can be slightly more expensive due to the precision labor required, despite using smaller (less expensive) individual diamonds
Which to Choose
- Choose pave if: You want visible diamond sparkle with individual stones you can see and appreciate, and you value easier maintenance
- Choose micropave if: You want the finest, most seamless diamond surface possible, and the continuous shimmer effect appeals to you
- Both are excellent choices. The difference is subtle and comes down to personal preference for sparkle texture
