Two Brilliant Shapes, Different Personalities
The round brilliant and the oval are the two most popular diamond shapes — and for good reason. Both offer exceptional sparkle, both look beautiful in every setting style, and both are timeless choices. But they create distinctly different looks. Here is how to decide between them.
Round Brilliant
- Shape: A perfect circle from the top view. The most symmetrical diamond shape. The original brilliant cut, optimized over centuries for maximum light return
- Sparkle: The gold standard. The round brilliant's 57 facets are mathematically optimized for maximum brilliance, fire, and scintillation. No other shape matches its light performance
- Face-up size: A 1.00 ct round brilliant measures approximately 6.5mm in diameter. This is the benchmark against which all other shapes are compared
- Finger coverage: Compact — covers the width of the finger proportionally. Classic and balanced
- Personality: Timeless, classic, traditional, universally elegant. The safe choice that will never look dated
- Price: The most expensive shape per carat due to the most rough diamond waste during cutting and the highest demand
Oval
- Shape: An elongated ellipse. The stretched proportions create a distinctive, modern look
- Sparkle: Excellent — similar brilliance to round brilliant because it uses a modified brilliant-cut facet arrangement. Slightly different scintillation pattern due to the elongated shape
- Face-up size: A 1.00 ct oval appears approximately 10-15% larger face-up than a 1.00 ct round because the elongated shape spreads more across the finger. This is one of the oval's biggest advantages
- Finger coverage: The elongated shape covers more finger length, which can make fingers appear longer and more slender. Flattering on most hand types
- Personality: Modern, elegant, fashion-forward, distinctive. Currently one of the most popular shapes for engagement rings
- Price: Typically 15-25% less per carat than comparable round brilliants. Better value for the size
The Bow-Tie Effect
- Oval diamonds can exhibit a dark shadow across the center (shaped like a bow-tie) caused by light leakage. This is the most important thing to check when buying an oval
- A minimal bow-tie is normal and adds depth. A prominent, dark bow-tie is undesirable and should be avoided
- Round diamonds never have a bow-tie because their symmetry is uniform in all directions
Side by Side Comparison
- Apparent size: Oval wins — looks 10-15% larger for the same carat weight
- Maximum sparkle: Round wins — mathematically optimized light performance
- Price per carat: Oval wins — 15-25% less expensive
- Finger-lengthening effect: Oval wins — the elongated shape creates a visually longer finger
- Timelessness: Both are timeless. The round has centuries of history; the oval has become a modern classic
- Setting versatility: Tie — both look beautiful in solitaire, halo, three-stone, and pave settings
The Decision
Choose round if you value maximum sparkle and timeless tradition above all else. Choose oval if you want the largest-looking diamond for your budget with a modern, elongated aesthetic. Both are excellent choices you will never regret.
