Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose the Right Chain Length

Length Determines Where the Necklace Sits — and How It Looks

A necklace's length is not just a measurement — it determines the entire visual effect. The same pendant on a 16-inch chain versus a 22-inch chain creates two completely different looks. Understanding chain lengths helps you choose pieces that complement your necklines, body proportions, and personal style.

Standard Lengths

  • 14 inches — Collar: Sits tightly around the base of the neck. Creates a choker effect. Works best with V-necks and off-shoulder tops. Most flattering on longer necks. Can feel restrictive on wider necks
  • 16 inches — Choker: Sits at the collarbone. The shortest standard necklace length. Frames the face and draws attention to the neckline. Works beautifully with crew necks and scoop necks
  • 18 inches — Princess: The most popular and versatile length. Sits just below the collarbone. Works with virtually every neckline. This is the default length for most necklaces and pendants. If you buy one length, make it 18 inches
  • 20 inches — Matinee: Sits at the top of the chest, a few inches below the collarbone. Slightly more relaxed than 18 inches. Works well with higher necklines because the pendant sits below the fabric line
  • 22-24 inches — Opera: Falls to the center of the chest. A dramatic length that works beautifully with pendants. Creates a long, elegant line. Ideal for layering with shorter chains
  • 28-36 inches — Rope: Falls below the chest. Can be worn as a single long strand or doubled up as a shorter multi-strand. Very versatile for creative styling

By Body Type

  • Petite frame: 16-18 inches is most proportional. Longer chains can overwhelm a smaller frame unless the pendant is very delicate
  • Average frame: 18-20 inches is the sweet spot. The widest range of options works well
  • Tall or larger frame: 20-24 inches creates better proportion. Very short chains (14-16 inches) can look too small relative to the body

By Neckline

  • Crew neck / High neck: 20+ inches so the pendant sits below the neckline. Shorter chains get hidden under the fabric
  • V-neck: 16-20 inches. The chain follows the V-shape of the neckline for a cohesive look. The pendant should sit within the V
  • Scoop neck: 16-18 inches. Fills the space created by the curved neckline beautifully
  • Strapless / Off-shoulder: 14-16 inches. A shorter chain draws attention to the exposed collarbone and shoulders
  • Button-up / Collared: 18-22 inches. The chain should sit below the collar for visibility

Layering by Length

  • For a 2-chain layer: separate by 2-4 inches (e.g., 16 + 20, or 18 + 22)
  • For a 3-chain layer: separate by 2-3 inches each (e.g., 16 + 18 + 22)
  • Mix chain styles for visual interest (cable + box + pendant chain)
  • Keep the shortest chain the most delicate and the longest the most substantial
