Moissanite vs Lab-Grown Diamond: An Honest Comparison

Two Different Gemstones

Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are both popular diamond alternatives, but they are fundamentally different gemstones with different properties, different appearances, and different price points. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

What They Are

  • Lab-grown diamond: Real diamond. Same chemical composition (pure carbon), same crystal structure, same physical properties as mined diamond. Created in a laboratory using HPHT or CVD technology
  • Moissanite: Silicon carbide (SiC). A completely different mineral with different chemical composition, different crystal structure, and different optical properties. Originally discovered in a meteor crater. Now created in laboratories

Visual Differences

  • Sparkle type: Lab-grown diamonds produce brilliance (white light return), fire (rainbow flashes), and scintillation in the same way mined diamonds do. Moissanite produces significantly MORE fire (rainbow flashes) — the rainbow effect is noticeably stronger, especially in sunlight. Some love this; others find it looks "too sparkly" or artificial
  • Color: Lab-grown diamonds are graded D-Z like mined diamonds and can be truly colorless. Moissanite tends to show a slight warm tint, especially in larger sizes and certain lighting conditions. Premium-grade moissanite minimizes this
  • Brilliance: Both are highly brilliant. Moissanite has a slightly higher refractive index (2.65 vs 2.42) which means even more light refraction

Physical Properties

  • Hardness: Diamond = 10 (hardest material). Moissanite = 9.25 (second hardest gemstone). Both are extremely durable for daily wear
  • Heat resistance: Both withstand normal jewelry temperatures. Diamond is more heat resistant
  • Durability: Both last forever with normal care. No practical durability difference for jewelry purposes

Price

  • Lab-grown diamonds: Significantly more than moissanite. A 1.50 ct lab-grown diamond might cost $600-1,500
  • Moissanite: The most affordable option. A 1.50 ct equivalent moissanite might cost $150-400
  • The price gap between moissanite and lab-grown has narrowed substantially as lab-grown diamond prices have decreased

Certification

  • Lab-grown diamonds are certified by IGI or GIA using the same 4Cs grading system as mined diamonds
  • Moissanite does not receive 4Cs certification from major gemological laboratories. Some moissanite companies offer their own certificates

The Honest Answer

If you want a real diamond with a real diamond certificate — lab-grown is your choice. If you want maximum size and sparkle at the lowest possible price and do not mind that it is not a diamond — moissanite is a valid option. Both are beautiful. Neither is wrong. It depends on what matters to you.
