The Formula for Maximum Brilliance
If sparkle is your top priority — and for many diamond buyers it is — certain choices maximize the light performance of your diamond while others diminish it. Here is the definitive guide to getting the most brilliant, sparkling diamond possible.
Step 1: Choose the Right Shape
- Maximum sparkle: Round brilliant. Designed specifically to maximize light return. No other shape matches it
- Near-maximum: Oval, radiant, and cushion. Modified brilliant faceting delivers excellent sparkle in non-round shapes
- Different beauty: Emerald and Asscher cuts produce dramatic flashes rather than traditional sparkle. Beautiful but not sparkly in the conventional sense
Step 2: Prioritize Cut Grade
- Always choose Excellent or Ideal: Cut grade has more impact on sparkle than any other quality factor. An Excellent cut diamond reflects approximately 95% of incoming light back to your eye
- Triple Excellent: Excellent cut, Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry. The highest light performance designation
- Never compromise on cut: A well-cut 0.90 carat diamond will outsparkle a poorly cut 1.50 carat diamond every single time
Step 3: Optimize Proportions
- Table: 54-57% for round brilliant. This is the top flat facet width
- Depth: 61-62.5% for round brilliant. Total height relative to width
- Crown angle: 34-35 degrees. Too steep or too shallow reduces light return
- Pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0 degrees. This is the most critical measurement for sparkle. Even a 0.5-degree deviation significantly affects light performance
Step 4: Choose the Right Setting
- Prong settings: Allow maximum light entry from all sides. The most sparkle-friendly setting
- 4 prongs vs 6: 4 prongs block less light. 6 prongs are more secure. The sparkle difference is minimal
- White metal settings: White gold and platinum reflect light back into the diamond. Yellow gold adds warmth but slightly less reflection
- Open gallery: Settings with an open gallery (visible gap beneath the diamond) allow more light entry from below
Step 5: Keep It Clean
- A dirty diamond loses up to 30% of its sparkle. Oils, lotions, and everyday grime coat the surface and block light
- Clean your diamond every 1-2 weeks for consistent maximum sparkle
- Put jewelry on after applying products — lotions and sprays are the biggest sparkle killers
