Quality Ranges Explained
Lab-grown diamonds, like mined diamonds, span a full range of quality grades. Not all lab-grown diamonds are created equal — the growth process produces diamonds ranging from gem-quality to commercial quality, just as nature does. Here is what to expect at each quality level.
Premium Quality (D-F Color, VVS-IF Clarity, Excellent Cut)
- What you get: A visually perfect diamond. Colorless, essentially flawless to the naked eye, with maximum sparkle from an Excellent cut
- Best for: Engagement rings, significant gifts, pieces you want to be objectively exceptional
- Price: The highest price point for lab-grown, but still 60-80% less than comparable mined diamonds
- Worth it? If you want the absolute best and budget allows. But the visual difference between D/VVS and G/VS is minimal in a mounted setting
Sweet Spot Quality (G-H Color, VS1-VS2 Clarity, Excellent Cut)
- What you get: A diamond that is visually indistinguishable from premium quality to the naked eye. Near-colorless color, eye-clean clarity, maximum sparkle
- Best for: The overwhelming majority of buyers. This quality level delivers the best balance of beauty and value
- Price: Significantly less than premium quality for a virtually identical visual result
- Worth it? Almost always the best choice. You pay for what you can actually see and enjoy
Value Quality (I-J Color, SI1-SI2 Clarity, Very Good-Excellent Cut)
- What you get: A diamond with very slight warmth and minor inclusions that may be barely visible in larger sizes. Still a beautiful, sparkly diamond
- Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, smaller accent diamonds, pieces in yellow or rose gold settings (which mask slight warmth)
- Price: The most affordable tier for lab-grown diamond jewelry
- Worth it? If budget is a primary concern. In yellow gold settings, I-J color looks excellent
What to Avoid
- Poor or Fair cut grade: Regardless of color and clarity, a poorly cut diamond will not sparkle. Never compromise on cut
- Very strong fluorescence with high color: Can cause a hazy appearance in some diamonds. Faint or no fluorescence is preferred
- I2-I3 clarity: Inclusions visible to the naked eye that can affect brilliance. Not recommended for center diamonds
The Universal Rule
Always prioritize cut grade above everything else. A G-color, VS2-clarity diamond with Excellent cut will outperform a D-color, FL-clarity diamond with Good cut. Cut is the engine of sparkle.
