Flush Setting Guide: Diamonds Embedded in Metal

Smooth, Sleek, and Completely Flush

A flush setting — also called a gypsy setting or burnish setting — embeds the diamond directly into the metal surface so the top of the diamond sits level with (flush with) the surrounding metal. No prongs, no raised bezel, no elevation. The diamond is literally part of the metal surface. It is the most low-profile and snag-free diamond setting available.

How Flush Settings Work

  • Construction: A hole is drilled into the metal band to exactly match the diamond's diameter. The diamond is placed in the hole, and the metal surrounding the hole is pushed over the diamond's girdle, locking it in place
  • Surface result: The top of the diamond (the table facet) is level with the metal surface. When you run your finger across the ring, you feel a smooth, continuous surface — no bump, no elevation, no prong
  • Visibility: The diamond is visible from directly above but does not protrude. From a side view, the diamond is invisible — the ring appears to be a plain metal band

Advantages

  • Maximum comfort: Nothing protrudes from the ring surface. No prongs to catch, no elevated bezels to press against adjacent fingers. The most comfortable diamond ring design possible
  • Maximum durability: The diamond is protected on all sides by metal. It cannot be knocked out, snagged, or exposed to side impacts. The most secure setting type
  • Perfect for active lifestyles: Athletes, medical professionals, manual workers, and anyone who works with their hands can wear a flush-set ring without concern about catching, snagging, or damaging the setting
  • Masculine aesthetic: Flush settings are the most popular diamond setting for men's wedding bands. The clean, unadorned look appeals to those who want diamond sparkle without a visibly jewelry-like appearance

Considerations

  • Reduced sparkle: Because the diamond is embedded in the metal, significantly less light enters from the sides compared to prong or bezel settings. Flush-set diamonds sparkle less than raised-set diamonds of the same quality
  • Limited diamond size: Flush settings work best with smaller diamonds (typically under 0.25 ct each). Large diamonds require too deep a channel in the band, weakening the ring structure
  • Cleaning: The diamond sits in a channel that can trap dirt. Use a soft brush to clean around the diamond's edges regularly

Common Applications

  • Men's wedding bands: A single flush-set diamond or a row of small flush-set diamonds in a men's wedding band adds subtle sparkle to a masculine design
  • Women's minimalist rings: A single flush-set diamond in a thin gold band creates the most minimalist possible diamond ring
  • Eternity bands: Multiple flush-set diamonds around the band create a smooth, comfortable eternity ring that is more practical than prong-set alternatives
