Eternity Rings: The Complete Buying Guide

Diamonds All the Way Around

An eternity ring features a continuous line of identically cut diamonds that encircle the entire band. The unbroken circle of diamonds symbolizes everlasting love and commitment, making eternity rings one of the most meaningful pieces of jewelry you can give or receive. Here is everything you need to know before choosing one.

Full Eternity vs Half Eternity

  • Full eternity: Diamonds go completely around the band. Maximum sparkle from every angle. The ring looks the same regardless of orientation on the finger. Cannot be easily resized (diamonds prevent metal removal/addition)
  • Half eternity: Diamonds cover the top half of the band. The bottom half is plain metal. Can be resized more easily. Slightly more comfortable (no diamonds pressing against adjacent fingers). More affordable than full eternity

Setting Styles

  • Prong set: Each diamond is held by tiny metal prongs. Shows the most of each diamond. Classic and traditional. Maximum light entry from all sides
  • Channel set: Diamonds sit in a groove between two walls of metal. Sleek, modern look. Very secure — no prongs to catch on clothing. Smooth profile for stacking
  • Pave set: Very small diamonds are set closely together with minimal metal visible. Creates an almost all-diamond surface. Maximum diamond coverage per millimeter
  • Bezel set: Each diamond is surrounded by a thin rim of metal. Most secure setting. Modern aesthetic. Each diamond is individually framed

Diamond Shapes for Eternity Rings

  • Round: Classic choice. Maximum sparkle. The most traditional eternity ring design
  • Emerald/Baguette: Rectangular step-cut diamonds create a distinctive Art Deco aesthetic. Clean, geometric lines
  • Oval: Elongated diamonds create an elegant, flowing pattern around the band
  • Princess: Square diamonds sit edge to edge for complete diamond coverage with no gaps

When to Give an Eternity Ring

  • Milestone anniversary: 5th, 10th, or 25th anniversary. The most traditional occasion for an eternity ring
  • Birth of a child: A new eternity ring for a new chapter of life
  • Upgrade: When you want to add sparkle to your existing engagement ring and wedding band stack
  • Self-purchase: A reward for a personal milestone or achievement. You do not need an occasion to treat yourself

Sizing Note

Full eternity rings are extremely difficult (sometimes impossible) to resize because the diamonds prevent the jeweler from cutting and adding or removing metal. Get your exact size measured before purchasing. If you are between sizes, go up half a size for comfort.
