Eternity Ring Guide: Full vs Half, When to Give, and How to Choose

The Complete Eternity Ring Guide

An eternity ring — a band set with diamonds all the way around (or halfway around) — is one of the most symbolic pieces of jewelry. It represents unbroken love, continuous commitment, and the milestones of a life shared together. Here is everything you need to know.

Full Eternity vs Half Eternity

  • Full eternity: Diamonds encircle the entire band, 360 degrees. Maximum sparkle from every angle. Cannot be resized (the continuous diamond setting prevents metal manipulation). More expensive due to more diamonds
  • Half eternity: Diamonds cover the top half of the band (the visible portion when worn). The bottom half is plain metal. Can be resized. More affordable. From the top view, looks nearly identical to full eternity
  • Practical recommendation: Half eternity for most people. It is more affordable, can be resized if needed, and looks identical from the wearing perspective (no one sees the bottom of your ring)

When to Give an Eternity Ring

  • Milestone anniversary: The most traditional occasion. 5th, 10th, or 25th anniversaries are the most popular
  • After a child: Marking the arrival of a new family member. A popular modern tradition
  • As a wedding band: Some choose an eternity ring as their wedding band. Beautiful, sparkly, and meaningful
  • Significant achievement: Career milestone, personal accomplishment, or surviving a challenge together
  • Push present: A gift given to a mother after childbirth. Eternity rings are a popular choice for this occasion

Setting Styles

  • Prong-set: Each diamond is held by individual prongs. Maximum sparkle because the diamonds are fully exposed to light. Slightly higher profile
  • Channel-set: Diamonds sit between two metal walls. Smooth, snag-free surface. Slightly less sparkle due to metal edges blocking side light. Very comfortable for daily wear
  • Shared prong/U-prong: Minimal metal between diamonds. Maximum diamond visibility with a lower profile than individual prong settings. Popular for modern aesthetics
  • Bezel-set: Each diamond enclosed in a thin metal rim. Most secure, most durable, lowest profile. Modern and clean

How to Choose

  • Diamond size: Small diamonds (1.5-2.0mm, approximately 0.01-0.03 ct each) for a delicate look. Larger diamonds (2.5-3.5mm, approximately 0.05-0.15 ct each) for more visual impact
  • Total carat weight: Typically ranges from 0.50 TCW (delicate) to 3.00+ TCW (statement)
  • Metal match: Match the metal to the engagement ring and existing jewelry
  • Band width: Should complement the engagement ring — typically similar or slightly thinner
