Protect Your Jewelry on the Go
Traveling with jewelry requires planning to prevent loss, damage, and theft. Whether you are going on a weekend trip or an extended journey, these practical tips help you enjoy your jewelry while keeping it safe.
What to Bring
- The essentials: Bring versatile pieces that work for multiple occasions. Diamond studs, a gold chain, and one bracelet cover most situations
- Avoid irreplaceable pieces: Leave one-of-a-kind heirlooms and extremely valuable pieces at home. Bring pieces you love but could replace if worst case happens
- Engagement/wedding rings: Most people wear these while traveling. Consider a simple travel band for adventurous activities and keep your real rings in the hotel safe
How to Pack
- Use a travel jewelry case: Individual compartments prevent pieces from scratching each other. Soft-lined cases protect against impact
- Separate everything: Rings in one section, earrings in another, necklaces in individual compartments. Never pile jewelry together
- Prevent chain tangles: Thread necklaces through straws or lay them flat between tissue paper. Fasten clasps before packing
- Carry-on only: NEVER pack jewelry in checked luggage. Always keep jewelry in your carry-on bag where it stays with you
At the Hotel
- Use the room safe: When not wearing jewelry, lock it in the in-room safe. Set a code you will remember
- Front desk safe: For very valuable pieces, the hotel's front desk safe may be more secure than the room safe
- Do not leave jewelry on the bathroom counter: It is easy to forget, and housekeeping cannot be held responsible
Activity Guidelines
- Swimming: Remove all jewelry before pools (chlorine damages metals), hot tubs, and ocean swimming (saltwater corrodes, and sand scratches)
- Beach: Leave jewelry in the safe. Sand, sunscreen, and saltwater are all enemies of fine jewelry
- Hiking/adventure: Wear only what you are comfortable losing. Ring can slip off a cold, wet finger on a mountain trail
- Spa: Remove everything before treatments. Heat, oils, and chemicals can affect metals and gemstones
Insurance
Before traveling with valuable jewelry, confirm your insurance policy covers loss while traveling. Some policies have limitations for international travel or specific activities. A quick call to your insurer before the trip provides peace of mind.
