Earring Back Types Explained: Which Backing Is Best

The Part You Never Think About — Until It Matters

Earring backs are the unsung heroes of earring design. They determine comfort, security, and how your earring sits on your ear. The wrong backing can cause earrings to droop, fall off, or irritate your ears. The right backing is invisible, comfortable, and secure. Here is every type explained.

Push Back (Butterfly Back)

  • How it works: A small metal piece with two folded wings that grip the earring post through friction. The most common earring backing in the world
  • Pros: Easy to use, universally compatible, inexpensive to replace
  • Cons: Can loosen over time as the metal wings spread. Less secure than other options — the most common backing to lose
  • Best for: Lightweight stud earrings, everyday wear. Not recommended for heavy or valuable earrings
  • Tip: Gently squeeze the butterfly wings together every few months to maintain grip tension

Screw Back

  • How it works: The backing screws onto a threaded post, creating a mechanical lock that cannot accidentally slip off
  • Pros: Maximum security. Virtually impossible to lose an earring with a properly threaded screw back. The most secure standard backing
  • Cons: Slower to put on and take off (you must screw each one). Can be fiddly with cold or damp fingers. The threading can wear over years of use
  • Best for: Valuable diamond studs, children's earrings (prevents loss), active lifestyles, travel

La Pousette (Guardian Back)

  • How it works: A disc-shaped backing with two notches that snap onto the earring post. Combines security of a locking mechanism with the ease of a push back
  • Pros: Very secure, easy to use, comfortable against the ear due to the flat disc shape. Distributes weight evenly
  • Cons: More expensive than butterfly backs. Less universally available
  • Best for: Heavy diamond studs and drop earrings. Prevents the drooping that butterfly backs allow with heavier earrings

Lever Back

  • How it works: A hinged lever that closes behind the ear, creating a loop through the piercing. Common on drop and dangle earrings
  • Pros: Very secure — the closed loop cannot slip out. Comfortable for extended wear. Elegant appearance from behind
  • Cons: Only works with earrings designed for lever backs (not interchangeable with post earrings)
  • Best for: Drop earrings, dangle earrings, hoop earrings. The standard for fine drop earring designs

Hinged (Huggie/Snap)

  • How it works: The earring itself has a built-in hinge that snaps closed, creating a complete hoop through the piercing
  • Pros: Extremely secure, streamlined appearance, no separate backing to lose
  • Cons: Fixed size — must match your piercing gauge. Cannot adjust
  • Best for: Huggie hoops and small hoop earrings. The cleanest look for hoops

Which to Choose

  • For diamond studs under 0.50 ct total: push back is fine
  • For diamond studs 0.50 ct+ total: screw back or La Pousette recommended
  • For drop earrings: lever back is the gold standard
  • For hoops: hinged/snap closure is standard
