Diamond Shape Guide: How Each Shape Affects Size Appearance

Same Carat Weight, Different Visual Size

A 1.00 carat round diamond and a 1.00 carat oval diamond weigh exactly the same — but they look very different sizes when viewed from above. This is because diamond shapes distribute their weight differently. Understanding this helps you choose a shape that maximizes visual size for your budget.

Shapes Ranked by Face-Up Size (Largest to Smallest at 1.00 ct)

  • 1. Marquise: ~10.5 x 5.2mm face-up. The elongated shape has the largest face-up area of any diamond shape. A 0.80 ct marquise can look as large as a 1.00 ct round
  • 2. Pear: ~8.0 x 5.3mm. The pointed end elongates the shape, creating a larger visual footprint than its carat weight suggests
  • 3. Oval: ~7.7 x 5.2mm. Approximately 10% larger face-up area than a round of the same weight. Increasingly popular for this reason
  • 4. Emerald: ~6.7 x 4.9mm. The step-cut has a broad, open table that creates a large visual presence despite being geometrically compact
  • 5. Radiant: ~6.3 x 5.3mm. Slightly larger face-up than round, with brilliant-cut sparkle in a rectangular shape
  • 6. Round: ~6.4 x 6.4mm diameter. The standard against which all other shapes are compared. Neither the largest nor smallest face-up
  • 7. Cushion: ~5.8 x 5.8mm. Tends to carry more weight in the depth (belly), making it appear slightly smaller face-up than a round of the same weight
  • 8. Princess: ~5.5 x 5.5mm. Square shape with weight concentrated in depth. Faces up about 5-10% smaller than a round of the same carat weight
  • 9. Asscher: ~5.3 x 5.3mm. Deep pavilion and high crown mean more weight is hidden in depth. Faces up smallest of the popular shapes

Using This to Your Advantage

  • If maximum visual size is your priority: choose oval, marquise, or pear. You get a bigger-looking diamond per carat
  • If maximum sparkle is your priority: choose round brilliant. No shape matches it for light return
  • If you want both size and sparkle: oval or radiant offer excellent compromise
  • If you want architectural beauty: emerald or Asscher. They trade sparkle for dramatic, hall-of-mirrors flashes

The Finger Factor

Elongated shapes (oval, marquise, pear) make fingers appear longer and more slender. Square and round shapes appear proportional on all finger widths. Consider this when choosing an engagement ring shape — the diamond should complement the hand it will live on.
