Your Pre-Purchase Verification List
Buying fine jewelry involves many details — and missing even one can result in disappointment, overpayment, or a piece that does not meet your expectations. Use this comprehensive checklist before every jewelry purchase to ensure you are making an informed, confident decision.
Diamond Verification
- Does the diamond have an IGI or GIA grading report? (If not, do not buy)
- What are the exact 4C specifications? (Carat weight, Color, Clarity, Cut grade)
- Is the cut grade Excellent or Very Good? (Never accept less than Very Good)
- Does the grading report number match the laser inscription on the diamond?
- What is the fluorescence level? (None to Medium Blue is generally preferred)
- What are the table and depth percentages? (Check against ideal ranges for the shape)
- Is the diamond eye-clean? (No visible inclusions to the naked eye)
Metal Verification
- What is the exact metal and karat? (10K, 14K, 18K, Sterling Silver, Platinum)
- Is the metal stamped with the karat mark? (10K, 14K, 585, 750, 925, PLAT)
- If white gold — is it rhodium plated? (Standard practice, needs replating every 1-3 years)
- Is the metal solid or hollow? (Important for chains — solid is more durable)
Setting and Construction
- Are prongs well-formed and secure? (No visible gaps between prong and diamond)
- Is the band smooth inside? (Comfort fit is preferred for rings wider than 3mm)
- Are all stones securely set? (Gently tap the piece near your ear — you should hear no rattling)
- Is the clasp functional and secure? (Test it multiple times — it should lock firmly)
Retailer Policies
- What is the return policy? (Minimum 30 days for engagement rings)
- Is there a warranty? (Covering prong repair, manufacturing defects, replating)
- What does shipping cost? (Should be free and fully insured for fine jewelry)
- Is the retailer established and reputable? (Check reviews, business history, and professional affiliations)
Value Assessment
- Have you compared prices with at least 2-3 other retailers for similar specifications?
- Is the price consistent with market rates for the stated quality?
- If there is a compare-at price or discount — is it genuine? (Compare the discounted price against other retailers' regular prices)
Post-Purchase
- Get the ring appraised independently within 30 days
- Set up jewelry insurance (1-2% of appraised value per year)
- Store the grading report and purchase receipt in a safe location
- Schedule regular maintenance: cleaning every 2-4 weeks, professional inspection every 6-12 months
