Buying a diamond ring is one of the few purchases where most people feel out of their depth. The industry counts on that. Here's how to be the exception.
What "Certified" Actually Means
A certified diamond has been independently evaluated by a gemological laboratory — IGI, GIA, or GCAL — and assigned grades for cut, color, clarity, and carat weight (the 4Cs). This matters because it means you're not relying on a seller's claims.
At Bijolina, every diamond ships with its original certification. You can verify the report number directly with the issuing laboratory.
Where to Save (Without Compromising)
Not all 4Cs are equal. Here's where smart buyers allocate their budget:
- Cut: Never compromise. Cut determines sparkle. A well-cut H-color diamond outshines a poorly-cut D-color every time.
- Color: F-G is the sweet spot. The difference between D (colorless) and G (near-colorless) is invisible to the naked eye but the price difference is 20-30%.
- Clarity: VS1-VS2 is enough. Inclusions below VS2 are invisible without a 10x loupe. Paying for IF or VVS is paying for something you'll never see.
- Carat: Consider 0.9 instead of 1.0. A 0.9ct diamond looks nearly identical to 1.0ct but costs 15-20% less. The same applies at every "magic number" (1.5, 2.0, etc.).
Ring Settings: What Affects the Price
The metal and setting style significantly impact total cost:
- 14K gold: More durable than 18K for daily wear, and more affordable
- 18K gold: Richer color, more prestigious, higher price
- Solitaire setting: Least expensive, showcases the center stone
- Halo setting: Makes center stone appear larger, moderate cost
- Three-stone: Most expensive, but makes a powerful statement
Red Flags to Watch For
- No certification or "in-house" certification only
- Prices significantly below market (likely lower quality than stated)
- "Enhanced" or "treated" diamonds sold as natural
- No return policy or extremely short return windows
