Weight, Not Size
Carat is the most misunderstood of the 4Cs. Most people think carat measures how big a diamond looks, but it actually measures how much a diamond weighs. A 1.00 carat diamond weighs exactly 0.200 grams (200 milligrams). The word 'carat' comes from carob seeds, which ancient gem traders used as counterweights because of their remarkably consistent weight.
Carat vs Visual Size
- Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different in size depending on their shape and how they are cut
- An oval diamond appears 10-15% larger face-up than a round diamond of the same weight because ovals carry more of their weight in their surface area
- A deeply cut diamond hides more weight below the surface, appearing smaller face-up than a well-proportioned diamond of the same weight
- This is why cut quality matters so much — a well-cut 1.00 carat diamond can look as large as a poorly cut 1.20 carat diamond
Popular Carat Weights and What They Look Like
- 0.25 ct: Approximately 4.1mm diameter (round). Subtle and delicate. Popular for everyday studs and accent stones
- 0.50 ct: Approximately 5.1mm diameter. Noticeable but not large. A popular starting point for engagement rings
- 0.75 ct: Approximately 5.8mm diameter. Solid presence without being oversized
- 1.00 ct: Approximately 6.5mm diameter. The psychological benchmark. Impressive on any hand
- 1.50 ct: Approximately 7.4mm diameter. Significant presence. Turns heads
- 2.00 ct: Approximately 8.1mm diameter. A statement size. Dramatic visual impact
The Magic Number Effect
Diamond prices jump disproportionately at 'magic numbers' — 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 carats. A 0.98 carat diamond can cost significantly less than a 1.00 carat diamond of identical quality because buyers psychologically favor round numbers. The 0.02 carat difference (0.4mm in diameter) is invisible to the naked eye but the price difference can be 10-20%.
Total Carat Weight (TCW)
For jewelry with multiple diamonds (tennis bracelets, halo rings, eternity bands), the weight is expressed as Total Carat Weight (TCW). A 2.00 TCW tennis bracelet means all the diamonds combined weigh 2.00 carats — not that each diamond weighs 2.00 carats. Always check whether a carat weight refers to a single stone or the total.
