Jewelry for Your Ankle
An anklet (ankle bracelet) is one of the most playful and seasonal pieces of fine jewelry. Worn around the ankle, it catches light with every step and adds an unexpected detail to sandals, open shoes, and bare feet. While anklets have ancient origins across many cultures, today they represent casual elegance and warm-weather style.
Types of Anklets
- Simple chain: A thin gold chain around the ankle. The most classic and minimal anklet. Cable, box, or Singapore chains all work beautifully at fine widths (1-2mm)
- Station anklet: A chain with small diamonds or beads spaced at regular intervals. Adds sparkle without bulk. The diamonds catch light as you walk
- Charm anklet: A chain with small pendants or charms. More decorative and playful than a plain chain
- Tennis anklet: A continuous line of diamonds around the ankle. The most luxurious option. Statement piece that turns heads
- Double chain: Two chains of different lengths creating a layered look on the ankle. Adds visual depth and movement
Sizing
- Measure your ankle with a flexible tape measure at the narrowest point (just above the ankle bone)
- Add 0.5-1.0 inch for comfortable fit. The anklet should move freely without sliding over your foot
- Standard sizes: 9 inch (small), 9.5 inch (medium), 10 inch (large), 10.5 inch (extra large)
- If between sizes, go up — a slightly loose anklet is more comfortable and flattering than a tight one
Styling Tips
- Best with: Sandals, open-toe shoes, bare feet, cropped pants, skirts, and dresses that show the ankle
- Less ideal with: Boots, closed shoes, or long pants that cover the ankle (the anklet is hidden and can get caught)
- One ankle: Traditionally worn on the left ankle, but either ankle is fine. One anklet is usually sufficient — two can look busy
- Metal matching: Match your anklet to other visible jewelry (rings on toes, bracelets) for a cohesive look
Care Tips
- Remove before swimming — pool chemicals and saltwater can damage the chain
- Remove before bed to prevent accidental tangling or breaking
- Anklets take more abuse than other jewelry (closer to the ground, more movement). Choose durable chain styles
- Clasp should be lobster claw or spring ring for security. Anklets take more stress than necklaces
